I bought a number of pairs for use in our elementary Afterschool program, and the walkie talkies last 6-8 weeks, at most. The unit stops charging the batteries and/or begins to have constant static, no matter what channel it's on. If you're looking for something that's going to be used often, and that you would like to last for a while, just spend the extra $20 to get something better.
One of the uses I had in mind is to use the radios for communicating between two closely space moving cars. Works O.K. Forget it. The steel body of a car is apparently too much of a barrier as it only works when the cars are next to each other, but is useless when they are more than a few hundred yards apart. for short distances in typical residential areas within about a mile or so apart. The charging system does not accurately indicate when you need a charge or when they are fully charged.
I said after using the 260s that I would buy cobra again, and I did. Nice thing is that the chargers are interchangeable between the 260s and 270s.
Bought a set of PR 260s over two years ago, and now bought a set of PR 270s. We use them on vacation for the family to keep in touch when out of sight.
These are great. We ran them all day, and charged them at night.
We also used them on two cruise ships - excellent. They are easy to use, and have enough power to cover any range that we needed.
For heavy useage, just keep a set of alkaline batteries handy. Great radios.
The radios are really cool and we were able to get reception pretty far (about a mile). I would not recommend them for serious use. They were bought for my kids to play with (ages 7 and 8). These radios are toys. Also, we didn't get a charger with them. It was advertised with a charger but there was not a charger in the package.
That means that each tiny little bit you encounter in your life hurts you a little bit more. The residues can continue to poison your family for decades after you've gotten rid of these radios.
If your kids touch these and then eat or touch their faces or mouths, they can become retarded from lead poisoning nerve damage. You might as well feed your kids lead paint chips.
These contain lead, it says so on packaging, but not when you buy online. If your children have been using these, CLEAN EVERYTHING to prevent the migration of the lead to your children bodies.
Seriously people, spend the extra few dollars and get a lead free Midland radio. Your kids will thank you for not being cheap and accidentally poisoning them.UPDATE:The poisonous lead residue can be left on doorknobs, walls, carpet, shoe laces, crayons, books, and anything else that gets touched while you have lead residue on your hands.
The poisoning is "cumulative". Children are the most vulnerable to lead poisoning, partly because they have to live with ongoing exposure to it longer than adults, who eventually will die of old age if the lead poisoning hasn't lasted long enough to kill them.
